Ammonomicon Tarnisher

Rust Belt
Half-holster, half-monster, the Tarnisher subsists on a diet largely consisting of guns. Strangely, this makes it both a bottom-feeder and an apex predator within the Gungeon.

The Tarnisher doesn't just like guns - it like likes guns.

Tarnishers are bag-like enemies that sink into the floor and chase the player. If it successfully catches the player, it will swallow the player and shortly after spit them back out, dealing damage, partially draining the current gun's ammo, and reducing the magazine size of all of the player's guns by 15% until they pick up ammo. Tarnishers will be momentarily immune to bullets when they begin their chase.

Once they stop chasing, they will remain stationary for a moment before chasing again.

Clearing the room or dying after getting caught by a Tarnisher at least twice will unlock the Hungry Bullets.

Notes[ | ]

  • When under the player, a Tarnisher will flash blue. This is the ideal moment to dodge roll to avoid being enveloped.
  • It is possible to outrun a Tarnisher if the player has enough speed upgrades, but under normal circumstances the player will have to either keep a large distance while constantly moving away from it or dodge roll over a pit where the Tarnisher will foolishly follow into its demise. The player can also hug walls and make frequent turns to gain distance. This works because the Tarnisher is larger than the player and cannot turn as sharply.
  • Guns with a magazine size of 1 are unaffected by Tanisher's magazine size reduction.
  • The Tarnisher's magazine size reduction stacks additively - getting swallowed 2 times reduces it by 30%.
    • If the player is swallowed 7 times, resulting in a 105% reduction, every affected gun gains infinite magazine size.
      • When this happens, guns with special shots at the end of the magazine, like Mailbox, every shot becomes the special shot
  • If the player has Shield of the Maiden when swallowed, the Tarnisher will not damage the player but instead swallow the item. The item is then dropped by the Tarnisher when killed.
  • The Tarnisher can be killed by explosions, such as those produced by a Nitra, when it is chasing the player.
  • The Tarnisher can be killed by environmental damage or companions while the player is swallowed to prevent them from doing damage and lowering magazine size.
  • The Tarnisher will damage the player even if they are immune to contact damage.
  • If a Tarnisher dies while spitting the player out, the game will crash.[citation needed]
  • If two Tarnishers catch the player at the same time the game will crash.
  • If the player has the Wolf, and the wolf kills the Tarnisher before it spits the swallowed player back out, the player will be freed and they will not take damage.
  • If the player has the Full Metal Jacket and has blanks, being swallowed by a Tarnisher will not harm the player or consume a blank.
  • If the Tarnisher is jammed, it will not do a full heart of damage but rather just the regular half a heart.
  • if the Tarnisher is killed by the blood shrine's effect during the spitting animation the player will not take damage

Trivia[ | ]

  • The Tarnisher is based on the Like Like from the Legend of Zelda series. This is also referenced in its Ammonomicon description, and also the fact that it steals the Shield of the Maiden if equipped, much like how Like Likes steal Link's shield.
  • The Tarnisher is also a reference to the Rust Monster from Dungeons and Dragons, a creature which devours ferrous metals (paralleled to the Tarnisher's consumption of ammo).
  • The Tarnisher's chase sequence may also be a reference to the portable hole from Dungeons and Dragons.
  • On some versions of the game there is a spelling mistake in the Tarnisher's description which reads, "the Tarnisher subsists on an diet largely consisting of guns."
