Hey i got the unlock without killing an enemy, i never drained anyone before but when i prayed to the blood altar on another run i got the unlock. it is most likely using the altar the second time unlocks it. this would also make sense as it mirrors the turkey's unlock condition from this update. Please let me know if anyone is able to replicate these results before I officially add it as an unlock method.

Hey there. I can guarantee that "Kill an enemy by draining" is not the condition. Just killed like, 50+ enemies with that. No unlock. Was my first time with the shrine.

Reload damage[]

The damage from reload seems to be based on the amount of damage you did before killing an enemy. I watched a streamer kill the Lich phase 1 with the Life Orb, and the reload did about 95% of phase 2, but the reload damage from the phase 2 kill (last 5% damage dealt with the Life Orb's laser) was very small on Lich phase 3.

It appears that damage also requires you to maintain the beam. I did 100% of bullet twin 1 with orb but had to roll a few times which interrupted the drain, reloaded and bullet twin 2 took 10% or so which feels low

  • Not directly related to this but I had an experience that beg to differ from the currently written "Life Orb can bypass DPS cap of bosses for a lot, but only against the lich" on the wiki page rn. I was playing Boss Rush, got a life orb, managed to kill Gorgun with only 1 ammo left (no damage bonuses or ammo bonuses present at this point), went into cannonbalrog next floor while never switching out of the gun, waited until the health shows up fully, and then reloaded. 3/4ths of the health was gone in an instant. Also I'm pretty sure my beam wasn't continuous. I dodge rolled a couple of times because the Gorgun double spray is tough without doing so otherwise. Shame that I wasn't recording it. "It appears that damage also requires you to maintain the beam. I did 100% of bullet twin 1 with orb but had to roll a few times which interrupted the drain, reloaded and bullet twin 2 took 10% or so which feels low" if I had to guess, it's possible that maybe you needed to wait until the "health bar" of the last remaining half of the twin gets full in order to get the full damage benefit out of the reload. Because bosses have somewhat of an invulnerable grace period while their health bar is going up to the maximum iirc. Or maybe simply that one enraged twin has much more health than one twin at the start of the fight. The final possiblity causing this issue is that maybe you didn't notice that you KILLED one of the few bullet kin minions that the twin summons during the fight, which would reset the damage that life orb "remembers"
