- The item name is a references to the nanomachines which Senator Armstrong uses in the final battle of the game "Metal Gear Rising: Revengence" and his famous quote: "Nanomachines, son!"
- The item's function also references said quote, as they "harden in response to physical trauma", which in the game is represented by getting armor after getting hit.
- The unused "College Ball" synergy also references Armstrong; the Ballot references the fact that Armstrong runs for president, and the name of the synergy is another one of his quotes: "Played college ball, ya know."
- The synergy "Pretty Good" is a reference to the popular quote from Metal Gear Solid, "You're pretty good".
